This course will discuss the past, present, and future of soft, hybrid, and rigid contact lens designs and manufacturing. An overview of the history of contact lenses will proceed into current lens material advancements in soft silicone hydrogel, soft daily disposable, scleral lenses and multifocal gas permeable lens designs. Improvements in manufacturing techniques, software and instrumentation used in contact lens fittings will be discussed. At the conclusion of this article, the reader will gain an understanding of the future possibilities of contact lens materials and designs that could be used to improve the patient's quality of life.
