The management of contact lenses in the elderly continually presents new challenges. This article gives an overview of the challenges associated with aging and contact lenses. Ocular changes such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and ocular surface disease will be discussed, as well as aging issues such as mental changes and dementia. The signs of dementia will be reviewed and preventative strategies to manage contact lens care will be discussed. At the conclusion of the article, the reader will understand the problems associated with contact lens use in the elderly and will be able to explain ways to improve patient care and management.
