Course Description:

The instructor will present the history and technological development of modern scleral lenses. The various categories and classification systems for scleral lenses will be reviewed. The use of scleral lenses for various types of irregular cornea will be presented, along with clinical examples. Principles of physiological fit will be addressed, Terminology and clinical features specific to the fit of scleral lenses will be reviewed. Examples of the increasing utility of scleral lenses will be presented.


Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the features of a modern scleral lens.
  2. Name the physiological requirements of scleral lenses.
  3. Understand implications of smaller vs larger scleral lens diameter and sealed vs. ventilated fit.
  4. Recognize markers of poor fit such as compression, impingement, and edge lift.
