Course Description:

Health inequities in eye care are well documented but rarely translated into action at the level of the clinical encounter. This presentation reframes the case for patient-centered, equitable eye care specifically for ophthalmic technicians across the US and Canada - the professionals most often present at the earliest point when a social barrier to care becomes visible. The presentation draws on recent epidemiological literature, Quebec- and Canada-specific research on underserved populations, and cross-disciplinary evidence on how health professionals build and sustain equity-focused clinical skills. Attendees will leave with a deeper knowledge of why a patient-centered approach to care is important and a set of practical habits that require no change in clinical scope but can meaningfully change what gets noticed and acted on in the clinical setting.
