Course Description:

The first part of this course will cover the good, the bad, and the ugly of optic neuritis covering signs and symptoms, testing for diagnosis, and treatment. The second part of the course will pivot to address the structural changes to the brain and eye referred to as Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) experienced by astronauts who have undergone long-duration space flight in microgravity environments. Astronauts who return after space flight may have disc edema, choroidal folds, cotton wool spots, nerve fiber layer thickening on OCT, globe flattening, or hyperopic shift. To launch us into 2026, our January webinar features neuro-ophthalmologist and NASA consultant Dr. Andrew Lee discussing his research and discussing what it can tell us about neuro-ophthalmology on earth.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the process for testing and treating optic neuritis.
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of SANS.
  3. Recognize the impacts of SANS.
