The importance of documentation is underscored in this Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) risk management course. Using actual OMIC closed medical malpractice claims, we hope to illustrate where the lack of documentation, or incomplete documentation, negatively impacted the defense of the claim. Recommendations on documentation are also provided to mitigate future liability risk.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the importance of documentation.
  2. Review how improper documentation can negatively impact the defense of a claim.
  3. Recommend ways to properly document to avoid mitigation.
