Course Description:
June 2 Best of ACE Capstones 2025 This week's webinar contains three of the ACE Capstones from 2025. These Capstone courses are three short lectures equaling 1.0 JCAHPO CE.
Courses and Descriptions:
- Losing Sight of the Big Picture: The Myopia Surge by Dr. Miller- Myopia is no longer just a common vision issue - it's a rapidly growing global concern with serious long-term consequences. This talk examines the sharp rise in myopia prevalence, particularly in younger populations, and highlights the growing body of evidence linking high myopia to sight-threatening conditions such as retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma, and strabismus. Attendees will gain insight into the drivers of this global trend and explore current approaches to mitigating progression and reducing the burden of future ocular complications.
- Why You May Be in Danger by Dr. Suh- Ergonomics awareness is an integral component of career longevity in ophthalmology. Your daily activities cause wear and tear on your body. Left unchecked over the years, this wear and tear may lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) and repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). In caring for oneself while assisting and examining patients and to offset risk for musculoskeletal injury, Dr. Suh will discuss recommendations for performing daily task movements and maintenance of good ergonomic postures.
- Do New Weight Loss Drugs Cause Blindness?! By Dr. Golnik- There have been several reports suggesting that the new class of weight loss drugs (GLP-1 receptor agonists) may be a risk factor for ischemic optic neuropathy and worsening of diabetic retinopathy. This talk will explore the data currently available.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the data regarding GLP-1 receptor agonist medications and vision loss.
- Identify daily tasks for improvement of ergonomic postures in ophthalmology.
- Understand factors leading to myopia increases worldwide and distinguish approaches to mitigating progression.
June 9 AI in the Clinic Artificial Intelligence (AI) can lead to better care outcomes and improve the productivity and efficiency of eye care delivery by allowing ophthalmologists to spend more time looking after patients, raising staff morale, and improving retention. Due to the recent global pandemic, telehealth/ telemedicine has become a high priority in government healthcare. Learning to properly utilize AI as a care enhancement tool will help meet the national goal of providing active military personnel and veterans with the best cutting-edge care available.
Learning Objectives:
- Review available AI interventions for ophthalmology clinics.
- Recognize ethical responsibilities of AI use in clinics.
June 16 Eyelid and Orbital Trauma The evaluation of eyelid and orbital trauma is common in the comprehensive ophthalmologist's and oculoplastic surgeon's practice. It is imperative that an appropriate triage and intake is performed for these patients. This course will review the evaluation and treatment of patients with eyelid and orbital trauma.
Learning Objectives:
- Review evaluation and treatment of patients with eyelid and orbital trauma.
- Prepare triage and intake procedures for patients with eyelid and orbital trauma.
June 23 ACE 2025 Keynote: Addressing Presbyopia with Intraocular Lenses Dr. Koch's Keynote Lecture will discuss the available options for addressing presbyopia with intraocular lens (IOL) surgery, describing the different methods and designs, potential pitfalls and complications, and future advances. His presentation will cover various strategies for treating presbyopia during cataract surgery, including monovision, simultaneous vision IOLs, and accommodating IOLs. He will also present case studies to illustrate these approaches in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare available options for addressing presbyopia with IOLs.
- Identify challenges, complications, and pitfalls common to different strategies of presbyopia treatment during cataract surgery.
